By the initiative of Councilmember Paul Krekorian, on Wednesday, April 20, 2016, the city of Los Angeles commemorated the 101st anniversary of the Armenian Genocide with a special event held at City Hall, during which a number of Armenian organizations, including the Western Prelacy, were honored for their contributions to the advancement of the Armenian Cause.
On behalf of H.E. Archbishop Moushegh Mardirossian, Prelate, Archpriest Fr. Nareg Pehlivanian, Rev. Fr. Ghevont Kirazian, and Deacon Khatchig Shannakian participated in the commemoration.
Councilmember Krekorian welcomed the guests and delivered his message on the lasting effects of Genocide on a people, in particular the savagery committed against the Armenian people by Ottoman Turkey, and commended the service of all Armenian organizations that work to bring recognition to our cause. Councilmember Krekorian also thanked his colleagues on the City Council for their support and solidarity, and urged all to participate in the Rally for Justice on April 24. In conclusion, the honorable Councilman presented letters of recognition to representatives of various Armenian organizations in commendation and appreciation for their hard work.
Remarks were also delivered by Councilmembers Paul Koretz, Mitch O’Farrell, and Bob Bluemnfield, who noted that it is inconceivable and unacceptable that the truth of the Armenian Genocide continues to go unrecognized 101 years on, and expressed hope that the United States government will soon join other nations in formally recognizing the Armenian Genocide.
On behalf of the Prelate, Archpriest Fr. Nareg Pehlivanian thanked the City Council for their ongoing support.
