On Thursday, February 12, 2015, the feast of Sts. Vartanants was celebrated within the Western Prelacy, beginning in the morning with a service held at St. Sarkis Church in Pasadena. Through prayers and hymns, clergy members paid tribute to the memory and legacy of the martyrs who gave their lives in defense of our faith and nation. At the conclusion of the service, parish pastor Rev. Fr. Boghos Baltayan expressed appreciation to his fellow clergymen for the collective commemoration of Vartanants, and conveyed his well wishes to the faithful, in particular to those bearing the name of the brave commander Vartan Mamigonian and his companions. A reception organized by the Ladies Guild followed at “Andon Andonian” Hall.

In the evening, Divine Liturgy was celebrated at Holy Martyrs Church in Encino, presided over by H.E. Archbishop Moushegh Mardirossian, Prelate, and with the participation of Prelacy clergy. Very Rev. Fr. Muron Aznikian celebrated Divine Liturgy and delivered the sermon, in which he gave a historical overview of the Battle of Avarayr and called on the faithful to defend and uphold our faith and national identity against modern-day “Hazgerd”s in the spirit and legacy of the Vartanants saints.
During the Liturgy, a special service was held memorializing the brave souls who fell during the decisive battle.
At the end of the service, clergy, deacons, choir, and faithful joined together for the singing of traditional Vartanants songs, followed by Giligia, the Pontifical anthem, and the Armenian national anthem. In conclusion, the Prelate conveyed his well wishes to the clergy and faithful bearing the names of the Ghevontiants and Vartanants saints.
