By the initiative of Los Angeles County Supervisor Michael Antonovich, in collaboration with the iwitness Team, on Saturday, September 17, 2016, a monument dedicated to the Armenian Genocide was blessed and dedicated at Grand Park in Downtown Los Angeles. On behalf of H.E. Archbishop Moushegh Mardirossian, Prelate, Very Rev. Fr. Muron and Rev. Fr. Ashod Kambourian attended and participated in the ceremony.
The monument, based on the black and white photographic sculptures of the iwitness installation, was created by Vahagn Thomasian with volcanic rock from Armenia. Split in two, the monument represents the disruption in the life of the Armenian people as a result of the Genocide. The rough portion represents the struggles of the Armenian people while the smooth portion represents the survival of the Armenian people.
The program began with a performance by Lark Musical Society members. Welcoming remarks were delivered by Rita Hadjimanoukian and Supervisor Antonovich. The keynote address was delivered by Salpi Ghazarian, director of the Institute of Armenian Studies at USC.
The unveiling and blessing of the monument followed, with the participation of clergy, Supervisor Antonovich, the iwitness team, and representatives from the Consulate General of Armenia.
The program concluded with musical performances.
