In Memoriam: Archpriest Fr. Mesrob Tashjian


It is with deep sorrow that H.E. Archbishop Moushegh Mardirossian, Prelate, and the Religious and Executive Councils announce the passing of Archpriest Fr. Mesrob Tashjian, who entered eternal rest on Saturday, July 23, 2016.

Archpriest Fr. Mesrob Tashjian was born in 1924 in Aleppo, Syria, where he received his primary education.

He continued his education at St. James Armenian Theological Seminary in Jerusalam, after which he entered the teaching profession. In 1961 he was ordained into the priesthood at Sts. Vartanantz Church in Providence, Rhode Island, where he served as parish pastor until his retirement in 1998. During this time, he received a Master of Arts degree in Biblical Studies from Providence College, and later a Doctorate of Ministry degree from Boston University. Alongside his pastorship at Sts. Vartanantz Church, Fr. Mesrob was a teacher and eloquent speaker with weekly broadcasts on Voice of America in Washington and hundreds of lectures on theological matters.

Fr. Mesrob retired in 1998 and later relocated to Los Angeles where he continued his service within the Western Prelacy, celebrating Divine Liturgy in various parishes as needed and serving as a visiting pastor in Utah, Colorado, Atlanta, and other regions. He also published two books on Armenian poetry and religious matters during this time.

Extreme Unction will take place during funeral mass on Friday, July 29th, at 10:00 a.m., at St. Mary’s Church in Glendale, followed by interment at Forest Lawn in Hollywood Hills. H.E. Archbishop Oshagan Choloyan, Prelate of the Eastern United States, will conduct the services. H.E. Archbishop Moushegh Mardirossian, Prelate, who was out of the country at the time, sent a condolence letter paying tribute to Fr. Mesrob’s faithful and exemplary service as a clergyman and teacher.
