On Friday, March 22, 2019, renowned Maestro Ohannes Tchekidjian’s 90th birthday was ceremoniously celebrated during an event organized by Hamazkayin Western Region Executive at Glendale Central Library. H.E. Archbishop Moushegh Mardirossian, Prelate, attended and conveyed his blessings and congratulations. Among the guests in attendance were Consul General Dr. Armen Baibourtian, clergy and community leaders and representatives, Hamazkayin Central Executive members, friends and supporters.
The program featured greetings and remarks by Hamazkayin Regional Executive members, the presentation of Prof. Tchekidjian’s life and service through a slideshow, and a special performance by former members of the Armenian National State Academic Choir conducted by the Maestro. The honoree was awarded a plaque on behalf of Hamazkayin Regional Executive and proclamations on behalf of State Senator Anthony Portantino, Los Angeles City Councilmember Paul Krekorian, and Glendale Mayor Zareh Sinanyan.
Consul General Baibourtian and Archbishops delivered congratulatory remarks.
The Prelate lauded Prof. Tchekidjian’s musical genius and applied the adage that “there are heroes and there are legends. Heroes are remembered and legends never die.” He regarded the honoree a man of faith and grace, nourished by the spirit of Gomidas, worthily received many honors during his illustrious career, not only a “national hero” but an immortal legend. His Eminence prayed for the Lord to bless Prof. Tchekidjian with more years to continue creating and contributing to our heritage, and gifted him a book on Armenian schools in Istanbul which features the Mekhitarian School that the honoree attended.
Prof. Tchekidjian expressed his gratitude to the organizers, participants, and attendees, and gifted Hamazkayin a book about his life and career.
