On Wednesday, October 15, 2014, H.E. Archbishop Moushegh Mardirossian, Prelate, and H.E. Archbishop Shahan Sarkissian, Prelate of Aleppo, visited Ferrahian School where the visiting Prelate had the opportunity to discuss the situation in Syria with the administration, faculty, and students. Holy Martyrs Church parish pastor Rev. Fr. Razmig Khatchadourian and members of the Prelacy Executive Council, parish Board of Trustees, and sister organizations participated in the visit.
Upon their arrival, the Prelates were greeted by sixth grade students. They then headed to “Avedissian” Hall where the student body had gathered for an assembly. Armenian teacher Mrs. Talin Kevork Djanetsian welcomed the Prelates and guests. She introduced Archbishop Sarkissian to the students and the purpose of his visit. She concluded by informing the Prelates and guests that the school has undertaken a new fundraising endeavor to assist Armenian schools and students in Syria.
A cultural program was presented for the Prelates, comprised of music, recitations, and dances performed by sStudents from various classes.
Principal John Kossakian thanked the Prelates for the important visit which served to familiarize the students with the plight of their fellow students in Syria. He spoke of the historical significance of Aleppo and of the valuable contributions of the Armenian community who settled in the area following the Armenian Genocide in 1915.
In his address to the students, the Prelate noted the reverent stillness in the hall stating, “The emotion felt in this hall is an expression of our empathy and compatriotism toward our community in Syria”, and invited the faithful for a round of applause in demonstration of support. At the conclusion of his message, the Prelate presented a memento to the school.
Archbishop Sarkissian greeted and highly commended the Ferrahian School family, stating that our schools have a vital role in the mighty task of upholding our national values. The Prelate sorrowfully spoke about the difficult conditions facing Aleppo’s Armenian Schools. He reminded the students to be thankful for all that they have and urged them to set aside some resources to assist their brothers and sisters experiencing hard times in Syria.
The assembly concluded with a joint prayer by the Prelates.
