Presentation of Dr. Garbis Harboyan’s Books at the Prelacy

On Thursday, November 10, 2016, the presentation of Dr. Garbis Harboyan’s two latest medical books was held at the Prelacy “Dikran and Zarouhie Der Ghazarian” Hall, under the auspices of H.E. Archbishop Moushegh Mardirossian, Prelate, and in collaboration with Asbarez Daily Newspaper and the Armenian American Medical Society.

The program began with the Lord’s Prayer, after which the Master of Ceremonies, Mr. Sarkis Mahserejian, greeted the guests, organizers, and participants. Mr. Mahserejian highlighted the important contributions of physicians and other professionals like Dr. Harboyan and the program participants not only in their respective fields but in our national life as well.

Asbarez editor Mr. Apo Boghigian presented the life, works, and service of Dr. Harboyan, which are echoed through his many books and articles.

Dr. Haroutune Armenian, the keynote speaker, reflected both on Dr. Harboyan’s professional and scholarly achievements. Through a series of slideshows, Dr. Armenian presented Dr. Harboyan’s two latest books and the vast number of hours and effort dedicated to putting together the comprehensive volumes. Speaking from the point of view of his decades-long friendship with the author, Dr. Armenian praised Dr. Harboyan as an accomplished physician as well as a devoted servant of our national life, a humble and modest man who has served quietly, and wished that he continue to enrich medical literature with his writings.

Dr. Vartan Tachdjian, former Vice-Chair of the Armenian American Medical Society, himself an author, a community servant, and a personal friend of Dr. Harboyan, paid tribute to Dr. Harboyan’s professional and personal legacy, including his commitment to preserving and fostering the Armenian language.

Dr. Harboyan expressed thanks to the Prelate, organizers, and program participants for the memorable evening, to collaborators Dr. Vazken Der Kaloustian and Vrej-Armen Artinian, and especially to His Holiness Catholicos Aram I and the Gulbenkian Foundation who made the publishing of the books possible. Dr. Harboyan spoke about his reasoning and the importance behind preparing the books in Armenian, stating that his mission is to demonstrate the richness of our mother tongue and to encourage the usage of Armenian scientific and medical vocabulary.

The Prelate began his message by noting that alongside his medical volumes, Dr. Harboyan is also the author of “Path to Crucifixion” and “Crucifixion to Resurrection,” which are dedicated to the Armenian Genocide Centennial, and which he said is a testament that he is first and foremost a faithful Armenian, a reality also demonstrated by his involvement in our community from a young age within the Catholicosate of the Holy See of Cilicia and his lifelong service in various community organizations. Dr. Harboyan, and those of his generation, have dedicated their lives not only to alleviating physical pain as a doctor, but the pains of our nation as well, stated the Prelate, while the new generations are preoccupied with their professions alone. In this regard, the Prelate also commended Dr. Armenian and Dr. Tachdjian. The Prelate also commended Dr. Harboyan’s qualities and virtues as a family man and community activist, and stating that his books are scientific and cultural treasures, wished that he continue to enrich our literary treasure house.

The evening also included performances on the guitar by young musician Saro Babikian.

The program came to a close with the Prelate’s benediction, after which the author signed copies of his books while guests enjoyed a reception.
