“YEAR OF THE ELDER” PONTIFICAL PROCLAMATION TO BE READ IN PRELACY CHURCHES

As previously reported, His Holiness Aram I, Catholicos of the Great House of Cilicia, has proclaimed 2014 the “Year of the Elder”.

By the ordinance of H.E. Archbishop Moushegh Mardirossian, Prelate, on Sunday, February 9, 2014, the Pontifical Message of His Holiness will be read in all Prelacy Churches during Divine Liturgy.

Earlier this week the Prelate returned from Lebanon after participating in the meeting of the Central Religious Council presided over by His Holiness Aram I, and the meeting of the Canonization Committee, a joint committee formed by the blessing of His Holiness Karekin II and His Holiness Aram I and comprised of clergy from the Holy Sees of Etchmiadzin and Cilicia.

On Sunday, February 9, the Prelate will preside over Divine Liturgy at Holy Martyrs Church in Encino where he will read the proclamation of His Holiness.

MORNING SERVICE AND BLESSING OF WATER ON THE
FAST OF THE CATECHUMENS

Saturday, February 15 is the Feast of St. Sarkis.  The feast is moveable and is observed the weekend after the Fast of the Catechumens, a fast established by St. Gregory the Illuminator.

The Sunday preceding St. Sarkis is the eve of the Fast of the Catechumens, when faithful fast for three days in fulfillment of their prayers.

The fast will begin at midnight on Sunday, February 9 and continue until the morning of Wednesday, February 12th, when faithful will gather at Prelacy Churches to break their fast by receiving Holy Communion and blessed water.  Please contact your local parish for service time.

FEAST OF THE PRESENTATION OF OUR LORD

Friday, February 14, is the Feast of the Presentation of our Lord to the Temple, “Dyarnentarach”.  The Feast commemorates the Holy Mother of God taking the infant Jesus to the temple when He was forty days old, as was the custom for all mothers.

The Feast of the Presentation will be celebrated in all Prelacy Churches on Thursday, February 13 with evening service and the traditional lighting of the bonfire.

During the church service, mothers will have the opportunity to present their children to the altar for blessing.  The bonfire will be lit in church courtyards following the service.

The Prelate will preside over services and deliver his message at St. Mary’s Church in Glendale.  The service begins at 6:00 p.

In keeping with tradition, Homenetmen scouts will be in attendance and will be hosted to dinner with the Prelate at “Armenak Der Bedrossian” Hall at the conclusion of the services.
